God’s giving us of bread each day – in both Old and New Testaments – is an act of mercy. It is not surprising, then, that the Lord’s Prayer brings together “give us this day our daily bread” and “forgive us our debts” because God’s providence in our lives is so often done in the midst of our own grumbling. This being Lent, a time of sacrifice, maybe that which you gave up for Lent is starting to cause you troubles. Maybe you’re grumbling a little more without your coffee or chocolate or social media. Such is to be expected in the face of sacrifice, which is why God’s providence and forgiveness are both blessings we must lean into at this time.

Throughout Lent, we are encouraged to give up our little indulgences – those things that we use as a crutch to limp through our lives; things like chocolate, caffeine, streaming video services, social media, and the like.
