God Sightings

Look to the heavens tonight and Thursday evenings from 10:00pm – 2:00pm and you will spot a God sighting. A God sighting is simply an acknowledgment that God has done something in our lives. But in this case, we will see God doing something in our midst! Those of us who live in the northern hemisphere, especially in the 17 northern United States including Ohio, will be able to view the phenomena of the northern lights known as the Aurora Borealis.

If you step outside late in the evenings provided, there is a relatively cloudless sky, and you face the north, you will have a good chance of seeing the beautiful dancing waves of light that have captivated us for millennia. It’s beautiful from afar to watch, but in fact it is quite a violent event where energized sun particles crash into the earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph. However, our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the attack. The magnetic field redirects the particles toward the northern and southern poles. The result is a Kodak moment that dazzles and fascinates. It’s truly a God sighting.

This week the VBS program called “Stellar” will explore everyday clues that God is present, passionate, and powerful in our lives. It’s hard to have a vibrant faith when we sometimes feel like God is distant and impersonal. However, students will learn that God is alive and active in our everyday lives if we just take time to look for him.

Make it a habit to watch for daily God sightings, because they are evidence that God is doing great things around us–including making a beautiful light show out of the darkness.

Again, Jesus spoke …, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

The Lord is Our Strength

Recently, I spoke with a new friend who shares my love of travel. We discovered we had both toured Mont St. Michel, an enormous abbey that sits atop a small island in Normandy, France. This popular attraction celebrates its 1,000th birthday this year, making it a beloved and historic landmark. It is truly a sight to behold!  Around its base are medieval walls and towers above which rise clusters of buildings that make up the village with the ancient abbey rounding off the top. The...

This is the Way; Walk in It

Hurray! It’s officially summer!  Don’t you love getting back to nature in the summer months?  In the spring our senses are tantalized with the emergence of green grass, birds chirping, and flowers budding. But in summer, we can enjoy all those things and more in warmer temperatures. It’s a wonderful thing. In the outdoors we cannot only connect with nature, but with our living God as well who shares his creation for all to enjoy. Spending time outdoors allows us to reconnect with our Creator...

God Has a Plan

At the beginning of my senior year in high school, Mr. Edmonds, our guidance counselor, visited each home room class to talk about our career plans following graduation. He emphasized the importance of choosing the right career path by saying, “You better know what you want to do when you graduate because you’re going to be doing it the rest of your life.” No pressure, right? Some students knew what path their life would take--college, the military, or a job. I had absolutely no idea, but...

Psalm 27

The devotional in These Days was from Psalm 27:4-10. When I first read it, it brought to my consciousness the times we have gone through this past year. Has God left us to flounder, alone? Psalm 27 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold* of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?2 When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes—they shall stumble and fall.3 Though an army encamp...

Good Enough

The prevailing opinion in our society seems to be that good people go heaven. But how good is good enough? Is 51% good deeds good enough for heaven? Maybe 60%; or 75%. What is God’s standard of goodness? Actually, Jesus disappointed and probably angered a lot of people on the idea of being good enough when He told the crowd gathered for the Sermon on the Mount that they had to be better than the Pharisees (the best of the Jewish society).  Jesus said, “For I tell you that unless your...

The Question of Why

Why are there so many rules for Christians? How can I possibly live up to all that? This is a question I heard several times from the unchurched when I was part of a Bible study at West Central Community Correctional Facility. You may have heard this from non-Christians also. They might also ask, “What are the rules and why do different churches have different rules? These questions usually relate to the requirements of various Christian denominations. The New Testament makes it abundantly...

Finding Gifts of Peace in November

This month, most of us celebrate Thanksgiving. There is rich history on this day, which should never be forgotten or taken for granted. Here is what comes to my mind regarding Thanksgiving that I want to share with my church family. I cherish memories of recent and also childhood Thanksgiving gatherings with family, friends, and extended family. Such a sweet memory of smelling the turkey roasting all day when I was a child at home with my parents andtwo older brothers....

Faith Like a Child

Matthew 18:2-4He called a little child to him and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:13-15Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to...

The Train of Life

1 Corinthians 13:4-7Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. When you think of love, what comes to mind? Do you see an image of two people embracing? Do you see a breathtaking sunrise or...
