Sermon: “The Freedom of Forgiveness” from Rev. Scott Nowack

This Sunday at First Presbyterian Church Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things Jesus asks of us—but it can also become a source of freedom. This Sunday, Rev. Scott Nowack will share a message titled “The Freedom of Forgiveness,” drawing from Psalm 114 and Matthew 18:21–35. When Peter asks Jesus how often he must forgive, Jesus responds with a story about a servant whose enormous debt is forgiven, yet who refuses to extend the same mercy to someone else. The passage challenges us to consider what it means to receive grace and then allow that grace to shape the way we respond to others. Forgiveness does not erase what happened or declare that hurt and injustice do not matter. Instead, it can free us from allowing resentment and bitterness to control what comes next. During worship, we will also pause in prayer as we remember the 25th anniversary of September 11, honoring those whose lives were lost, those who continue to grieve, and the many who ran toward danger to help others.
