Sermon: “Dying to Self; Living in Covenant” from Jeffrey Schooley

Jesus’ healing of a Roman royal official’s son is no mere act of charity or benevolence. In this miracle, Jesus makes it clear that the Messiah is the savior of the entire world and not just Israel. Of course, this means that the world must receive the Jewish Messiah as its savior, which will come at a cost to its own identity and self-perception. Another way to think of this is to see even the very best and strongest parts of ourselves as in need of a Lord, of a King of kings.

For this year’s season of Epiphany, we are going to look at the way John’s Gospel helps us to see who Jesus is, especially through the seven signs. Each sign, of course, reveals that Jesus is the Messiah, but in each instance that word – Messiah – grows in meaning. Then, as we come to see who Jesus is better, we will also grow to see our lives in greater purpose and detail.
