The Church's Movie: Elf

Before Jesus can even be weaned, He and His family have to flee to Egypt. Even after they return, He still won’t be raised in His family’s hometown. Throughout His life, Jesus is a resident alien, which is why Paul reminds us that we – His followers – are also a colony of heaven. Know who else was a resident alien? Buddy the Elf. For this reason, above all others, Elf might just be the movie the Church and Jesus watch together every year.

Scripture References: Matthew 2:13-23, Philippians 3:17-21

From Series: "Advent at the Movies"

In my household – and likely in yours – one of the great joys of the Christmas season is Christmas movies. Cold temperatures outside are warded off by the warmth of fun films, close cuddles, and blankets. Many of these films carry more than just good family memories; they carry the very character of Advent. Over the four weeks of Lent, you are invited to watch four classic Christmas movies and then engage these stories through the lens of the story of Advent. For best results, watch the movies/shows in advance of each Sunday.
