Materialism

With the rise of mass production in the early twentieth century, every sort of material resource became more efficient to produce and thus cheaper to consume. Add to this advancements in mass transit and an increasingly globalized economy and now we can all buy cheap sneakers from China, affordable pants from Bangladesh, Mexican-made shirts, Taiwanese cell phone cases, holding our Korean-made cell phones, while we eat waffles covered in maple syrup from Canada at an International House of Pancakes. Oh, and the cars we take there have parts from no less than 13 nations in them. All of this efficiency and affordability, coupled with slick marketing, has tempted us to use our riches for consumption of goods. However, as both of our scripture lessons make clear, our goal should be more about consummation than consumption.

From Series: "Sermon Madness"

When COVID-19 shut down two wonderful institutions in March – the church’s in-person worship and the NCAA March Madness tournament – we sought to ease the pain of these loses by having our own “Sermon Madness” tournament. The four weeks in September are all dedicated to the winners from each bracket – Election (theology), Esther (Bible), Christianity and Materialism (Ethics), and Christian Family (Hodge Podge bracket). These are the sermons you voted for day-after-day. It’s like Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”
