Partners in Peace

John’s life is described by Jesus as “a burning and shining lamp” that precedes the coming of the Lord, illuminating His path, showing others the way to The Way. Though Jesus also says that He does not need such testimony from others – the Christ is sufficient in Himself – He deigns to partner with John, with you, with the church. In godly humility, Christ drafts us into a mutual service, bringing about God’s shalom, God’s peace. We are, as was John, “partners in peace.”

View any piece of classic, Christian artwork and whenever you see John the Baptist, you’ll see him pointing away from himself and toward Jesus. In this, John is the proto-disciple of Jesus; the blueprint for our own lives. Our Advent worship this year will anticipate the coming Christ by learning to point our lives toward him… just like John. John the Baptist is, truly, the Pointing Prophet. Let us explore how the Advent gifts of Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace can all be pointed toward our Lord.
