A Show and Tell Christmas Story

John’s most formal role in the ministry of Jesus is to testify. To testify is to give a prophetic witness to the life, rule, and reign of Jesus the Christ. Yet what is significant about John’s testimony is the way in which it takes shape as both the words he speaks and his actions. His is a model of showing and telling, which authenticates his witness that much more. And central to the “showing” is his Joy in the presence of the Lord. Still, today, the same remains true for us.

Scripture References: Luke 1:39-45, John 1:6-9

View any piece of classic, Christian artwork and whenever you see John the Baptist, you’ll see him pointing away from himself and toward Jesus. In this, John is the proto-disciple of Jesus; the blueprint for our own lives. Our Advent worship this year will anticipate the coming Christ by learning to point our lives toward him… just like John. John the Baptist is, truly, the Pointing Prophet. Let us explore how the Advent gifts of Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace can all be pointed toward our Lord.
