The Daily Discipleship of Deacons

It is the Deacons of the church who provide for the daily needs of the congregation – visiting the sick, tending to the needy, “waiting tables” for the Lord. It is they who bring comfort to the mourning when a friend or family member enters the “great cloud of witnesses.” While not formally a Session committee, the Deacons are an office of the church that can boast a scriptural heritage that serves as both their origin and their destiny. As we celebrate All Saints Sunday by remembering the dead from our congregation and beyond we also remember the Deacons who care for us in life and in death.

From Series: "Committees for Christ"

During the Session/Deacon training in June 2021, Pastor Jeff solicited sermon topics and themes from the Elders and Deacons. One of the themes recommended was to preach a sermon series on the Session Committees of our church in order to help the congregation see the ways that our Committees and Teams aren’t just part of an organizational flow chart, but are “Committees for Christ.” As Pastor Jeff returns from his sabbatical, we will focus on the mission and ministry that we are called to together and the shape this mission and ministry takes through our Session’s leadership of the church. Each week will feature a sermon and a “Minute for…” from the chairperson for each Committee. The hope with this series is that when you’re asked to join a Committee, what you hear is an offer to join in Christ’s ministry in the world since these are “Committees for Christ.”
