Working Together

The pairing of Mission and COT is more than a logistical necessity to make sure there’s time enough in this sermon series to hit on ALL the Committees. It’s also an acknowledgement that our Mission work as a church and our Community Outreach as a church share a lot in common. Mission is how we practice Christ’s justice in the world by matching the world’s poverty with God’s rich grace. Community Outreach is how we present the church as the locus of God’s reign and rule in the world. Mission without Outreach is just social justice. Outreach without Mission is just marketing. The two live hand-in-hand, as we see in the witness of Paul’s life.

From Series: "Committees for Christ"

During the Session/Deacon training in June 2021, Pastor Jeff solicited sermon topics and themes from the Elders and Deacons. One of the themes recommended was to preach a sermon series on the Session Committees of our church in order to help the congregation see the ways that our Committees and Teams aren’t just part of an organizational flow chart, but are “Committees for Christ.” As Pastor Jeff returns from his sabbatical, we will focus on the mission and ministry that we are called to together and the shape this mission and ministry takes through our Session’s leadership of the church. Each week will feature a sermon and a “Minute for…” from the chairperson for each Committee. The hope with this series is that when you’re asked to join a Committee, what you hear is an offer to join in Christ’s ministry in the world since these are “Committees for Christ.”
