Naming Rights
“What’s in a name?” the lovestruck Juliet pleads, seeking a way to justify her budding love for Romeo of her family’s rival. While it is easy to get swept up in Juliet’s romanticism, names are actually quite important. When God creates Adam, one of Adam’s first tasks is to name all the animals. When Moses is weaned from his mother and becomes the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, he is named Moses. Is that a Hebrew name, an Egyptian name, or is there something else happening here? How we understand naming is how we understand power and purpose.
