God's Glory
The contrast between darkness and light brings one back to the beginning, when Earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And God said, "Let there be light," and God called it good. It is God's light and his glory. According darkness is the primal state, "of the flesh," as the writer sees it. God's will is in the light, not in the darkness. God calls Israel into a special relationship to him as the instrument by which God will spread his light to all the nations.
