CloseThere is an interpretation of the feeding of the 5,000 in which it is hypothesized that all of these pilgrims who went out to see Jesus did bring food with them, but were insecure that it was not enough – and definitely not enough to share. This interpretation argues that when Jesus is shown sharing His food that everyone else did the same and – voila! – there was more than enough. It’s not a bad interpretation, though it does rob something from the miraculous nature of this event (unless, of course, we think the most miraculous thing would be everyone sharing freely!). Even still, I’m inclined to hold to the miracle as a way of reminding myself that some work just belongs properly to the Lord and the Lord, alone. And this is fine, for we have a Limitless Lord.
