Faith Like a Child
Matthew 18:2-4
He called a little child to him and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 19:13-15
Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
1 John 3:1
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
What is this child-like faith we are supposed to have? Apparently, we adults had it at one time. What happened to it? Do we still have the faith of a child?
Small children trust their parents and believe what they’re told. They have no doubt that Santa Claus is real, and that he rewards good boys and girls. Likewise, they believe in the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy. And if the parents teach them about God, they have an unwavering faith. Children have no difficulty believing there is only one God. They fully accept the virgin birth of Jesus. They believe in the Easter story of crucifixion and resurrection. And they believe in Heaven. Because they are secure in their trust of their parents/grandparents, they believe.
Although their faith is simple, it is complete, sure, and perfect.
Again, what has happened to the child-like faith we adults once had? As we aged and our minds became able to handle more abstract thought and develop an ability to reason, life happened. Our thoughts and ideas were shaped by the people and circumstances around us. Did we lose our child-like faith?
So, how do we recover that faith? I would make a few suggestions. Remember that God is still in control of a chaotic world. We should be secure of our trust in God. Our hope should be strongly placed in Him, and let our daily worries be given to Him who is all powerful. We are the children of God. Maybe that faith can be recovered by returning to the place we acquired it to begin with: the family—church family. Surround yourself with those who strengthen you instead of those who tear you down.
Being child-like in our faith in Christ does not mean that we should not educate ourselves: it is good to study, question for understanding, and discuss. Read the Bible regularly and attend church. Consider joining Sunday School and the weekly Bible Study. Pray “without ceasing”. Teach our children, and let our children teach us. I pray we adults become humble, teachable, trusting again like a child.
1 Corinthians 12:12-14
On Sunday, Rev. Dr. Harsh spoke to us about the God’s Gift for the World using Paul’s letter in Corinth. The scripture includes, but is not limited to 1 Corinthians 12:12-14: "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many." Paul’s...
Hebrews 6:1-12
Hebrews 6:1-12 “Therefore let us go on toward perfection, leaving behind the basic teaching about Christ, and not laying again the foundation: repentance from dead works and faith toward God, 2instruction about baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And we will do this, if God permits” (Hebrews 6:1-3) Today’s lectionary reading from Hebrews is a good reminder that sometimes these readings pick up in the middle of things and, if we don’t go back and come...
Genesis 4:1-16
Genesis 4:1-16 “Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, ‘I have produced a man with the help of the LORD.’ Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground” (Genesis 4:1-2) In the second creation story, man is created from the ground – formed by God out of clay and left inanimate until God breathes God’s Spirit into the man – and from this man God takes a rib in order to make woman. The man is named Adam, which is...
2 John 1:1-13
2 John 1:1-13 “Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, in truth and love….” “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning – you must walk in it. 7Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist!” (2 John 1:3, 6-7) Somewhere in recent...
Luke 1:57-66
Luke 1:57-66 “Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. 63He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And all of them were amazed. 64Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God.” (Luke 1:62-64) This part of John’s nativity story always scares the dickens out of me. I mean, what else could you expect when a pastor reads a story about a priest who loses his voice? It’s sort of like a...
Zechariah 3:1-10
Zechariah 3:1-10 “The angel said to those who were standing before him, ‘Take off his filthy clothes.’ And to him he said, ‘See, I have taken your guilt away from you, and I will clothe you with festal apparel.’” (Zechariah 3:4) The “ugly Christmas sweater” has become a sort of staple in modern society. Some folks even throw Christmas parties with this as the theme where the “winner” with the ugliest Christmas sweater gets some sort of prize. (Think: Rudolph with a flashing red nose serving as...
Revelation 1:17-2:7
Revelation 1:17-2:7 “As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands…” (Revelation 1:20-2:1) Because of the wild imagery and a certain reputation, the Book of Revelation receives...
2 Peter 3:1-10
2 Peter 3:1-10 “This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you 2that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.” (2 Peter 3:1-2) This past Sunday I asked the question, “Why is Advent?” Sometimes when a thing becomes routine – a tradition even – we take for granted why it even exists. We just know that we did it...
Isenheim Altarpiece
This devotion is a little bit different than the rest. Instead of a single scripture passage from which to work and meditate, above you will find Matthias Grünewald’s “Isenheim Altarpiece.” Though designed by a German, this piece of stunning artwork presently resides at the Unterlinden Museum at Colmar, Alsace, in France (a reflection of many European wars that have blended German and French culture and cultural artifacts). I would encourage you to read all about this piece on Wikipedia...
Ezra 10:1-17
Ezra 10:1-17 “While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him out of Israel; the people also wept bitterly. 2Shecaniah son of Jehiel, of the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra, saying, “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. 3So now let us make a covenant with our God...
